Machine Learning Helps Particle Beam Breakthrough \”Major paradigm shift\”
Researchers from the Department of Energy and University of Chicago have developed an algorithm that can more accurately predict the distribution of particles in a beam as it passes through a particle accelerator.
The linear accelerator at the DOE SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, which travels at almost light speed to produce its particle beam, fires bursts containing close to one billion of electrons into long metallic pipes. The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center is located in Menlo Park in California. Since its construction in 1962, it has been using its 3.2-kilometer long accelerator to propel electrons up to 50 gigaelectronvolts.
Researchers are unable to gauge the appearance of the particle beam as it passes through the linear accelerator.
