People age and lose strength and muscle mass. This can lead to age-related illnesses and frailty. Promoting muscle health is a research area that has a lot of interest, as the reasons for the decline are still largely unknown. Researchers from NUS have recently conducted a study that shows how a muscle molecule responds to weak magnetic field to promote health.
The team, led by Associate Professor Alfredo Franco -Obregon of the NUS Institute for Innovation in Health and Technology (iHealthtech), found that a TRPC1 protein responds to weak magnetic fields. This response is activated by the body when it exercises. The magnetism could be used as a tool to improve muscle recovery in patients with reduced mobility.
The use of pulsed magnet fields to simulate the effects of exercise is likely to benefit patients who have suffered muscle injuries, strokes, or are frail due to advanced age, said Assoc Prof Franco-Obregon.
