Mercedes-Benz Gets California’s OK to Sell Level 3-Self-Driving Cars

Mercedes is the first automaker in California to sell Level 3 autonomous vehicles
Reuters reported that Mercedes-Benz was the first automaker in California to receive permission to sell or lease cars with Level 3 self-driving tech (hands-off, eyes-off). California Department of Motor Vehicles has issued a permit to the company for its Drive Pilot system. The conditions are that it must be used in certain circumstances and on certain roads. Mercedes-Benz previously received a certification similar to this in Nevada.

Drive Pilot allows Mercedes-Benz drivers the freedom to do non-driving tasks like texting and watching videos. Mercedes will be held legally responsible for accidents that occur if the rules of use are adhered to.

The Drive Pilot system uses sensors throughout the vehicle, including visual cameras and LiDAR arrays. It also relies on radar/ultrasound, audio microphones, and other sensors to listen out for emergency vehicles approaching. It can compare GPS and sensor data onboard to pinpoint its exact location.
