Meta makes a big bet on AI using custom chips and a supercomputer
Meta held a virtual event today to reveal its plans for developing in-house infrastructures for AI workloads. This includes generative AI, such as the kind that powers its newly launched tools for ad creation and design.
Meta was trying to project strength, as it has historically been slow to adopt AI friendly hardware systems. This has hampered its ability to compete with competitors such as Google and Microsoft.
TechCrunch quoted Alexis Bjorlin as VP of Infrastructure, Meta. \”Building [hardware] capability gives us control on every layer, from datacenter designs to training frameworks.\” This level of vertical integration will be needed to push AI research boundaries at scale.
