The diabetes drug metformin may protect aging brains
WEDNESDAY Sept. 23, 2020, (HealthDay News). A common type-2 diabetes drug called metformin could have a positive side effect. New research indicates that people who take the drug have a significantly slower decline in memory and thinking as they age.
Katherine Samaras, the study’s author, said: \”Our six-year research of older Australians who have type 2 diabetes revealed a relationship between metformin and a slower cognitive [mental] degeneration and lowered dementia rates.\” She is the leader of the Healthy Aging Research theme at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, New South Wales in Australia.
Samaras stated that the findings offer new hope in reducing dementia risk among people with type 2 diabetes and possibly those without diabetes.
