AHS18 Michael Rose – Evolutionary Biology of Diet and Aging
Age and evolution history are important factors in human health. Hamilton’s forces and natural selection lead to greater adaptation in younger ages. Evolutionary biologists have long explained the aging process by this mechanism. Second, populations adapting to new environmental conditions takes only a few generations, if you look at the early stages of evolution when natural selection is strong. Thirdly, as natural selection weakens with age, it is less likely to adapt to an environment that has not been evolutionarily old. These three themes will be illustrated by both explicit mathematics and experimental findings. We will then apply these scientific insights to human evolution history, human aging and optimal diets.
