Google’s AI tools in Docs and Gmail are now called Duet AI, its answer to Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft hasn’t slowed down its fight with Google over AI features.
Microsoft announced new updates for its GPT-4 powered Bing Chat just a few days ago, but it is back with some major improvements today. Microsoft has focused its mobile efforts on Edge mobile contextual chat, Bing widgets for iOS and Android and continuous Bing Chat conversations across mobile and desktop. This comes just days after Google rebranded their AI tools for Docs, Gmail and Google Drive as Duet AI.
Microsoft is launching these new features, which are mobile-first, just as it finishes implementing its image and video responses, restaurant bookings and chat history, all of which were announced earlier in the month. Microsoft launched Bing Chat just over 100 days ago and is showing no sign of slowing its AI announcements.
You can now start a Bing Chat chat on your PC, and continue it on mobile. Microsoft gives the example of having Bing Chat create a recipe on your PC, and then have it provide you with a substitute when you are at the grocery store because they’re out of an essential ingredient. The rollout will begin today, and all iOS and Android users will have access to the app within the week.
Microsoft Edge for iOS and Android now has contextual chat. It’s very similar to the Bing sidebar in the desktop version, which lets the mobile version read the context of the website you are on. Tap the Bing Chat icon on the Edge bottom to ask questions about the website you are viewing, or ask Edge to summarize an article you are reading.
Edge mobile also includes selected text actions, where you can highlight text and Bing explains or summarizes it. Microsoft has announced that both of these Edge features are coming to mobile users soon.
Microsoft will also bring a mobile widget for iOS and Android users. This widget can be pinned to the homescreen to provide quick access to Bing chat. The widget has a Bing Icon to jump straight into Bing chat and a mic icon to ask questions with voice. The widget will be available for iOS and Android this week. Microsoft is also working to improve its voice input language support.
