Around 13 years ago I watched as my mother, who was very important to me, slowly died from Lewy Body dementia. It was a real wake-up call for me. I wanted to do anything to avoid the slow decline in my brain as it ages. What helps us to stay sharper longer? How can we tell the difference between fads and solid, scientifically-backed advice about aging?

Daniel Levitin has written a new book entitled Successful Aging: A Neuroscientist explores the power and potential of our lives.

Levitin, a neuroscientist and psychologist, is professor emeritus of McGill University, Montreal, as well as a faculty fellow at UC Berkeley. His book, which is a highly researched work, provides fascinating insights on how early childhood experiences and personalities, as well as social relationships and lifestyles, all influence the development of our brains. It also dispels stubborn myths about cognitive decline. Levitin argues against ageism, highlighting older people’s unique gifts, and shows us how we can become happier, more wise, and sharper as we age.
