NVIDIA Ace for Games: Generative AI breathes life into virtual characters
When gaming and artificial intelligence collide, it will hopefully look like this but sound better.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang gave a glimpse to the world at Computex 2023, in Taipei. He showed a stunning rendering of a cyberpunk Ramen Shop where you could actually speak with the owner.
It imagines that instead of clicking dialogue options, you can hold down a key, say something in your own voice and receive an answer from a character. Nvidia calls it \”a peek at the future of gaming.\”
The use of Generative AI is revolutionizing the way games are designed, produced and played. These technologies are being explored by game developers to see how they impact the pipelines for creating 2D and 3-D content during production. The ability to create new gaming experiences in real-time, which would have been impossible with older solutions, is part of the excitement.
As games became more complex, the creation of non-playable (NPC) characters evolved. The number of recorded lines has increased. There are more options for players to interact with non-playable characters. Facial animations have also become more realistic.
But player interactions with NPCs are still transactional, scripted and short-lived. Dialogue options run out quickly, which only serves to advance the story. Generative AI can now make NPCs smarter by improving their communication skills, creating personalities that change over time and enabling dynamic responses unique to the players.
