Nvidia takes on Intel and AMD in supercomputers
May 22, (Reuters) – Nvidia Corp. (NVDA.O), on Monday, announced that it had worked with University of Bristol in the U.K. to build a supercomputer based on a Nvidia chip. The new supercomputer would compete with Intel Corp. (INTC.O), and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD.O).
Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) are the most popular in the world. They can be used for artificial intelligence because they speed up work. OpenAI’s ChatGPT was built with thousands of Nvidia graphics processing units.
Nvidia’s GPUs are usually paired with a CPU, a market that Intel and AMD have dominated for decades. Nvidia began shipping its Grace CPU chip this year. It is based off technology developed by SoftBank Group Corp’s (9984.T), Arm Ltd.
