Organic Electrochemical Transistor – A Novel Sensor for AI Applications

A sensor and processor that is an organic electrochemical transistor

Electronic engineers have tried to create new hardware inspired by the brain that will run AI models more efficiently. Most existing hardware is either specialized for sensing, processing, or storing data. However, some teams are exploring the possibility to combine these three functions in a single unit.

Researchers from Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of Hong Kong, as well as Xi’an University of Science and Technology, have developed a new organic semiconductor that can be used both as a processor and a sensor. This transistor, introduced in a paper published in Nature Electronics, is based on a vertical traverse architecture and a crystalline-amorphous channel that can be selectively doped by ions, allowing it to switch between two reconfigurable modes.

Tech Xplore reported that Prof. Wei Ma, one of the researchers involved in the study, and Prof. Zhongrui, another, used separate systems to process data, store memory, and sense it.
