The real population bomb is the aging population
The pandemic is a good way to learn how to prepare.
The total world population reached 8 billion on November 15, 2022. The transition from 7 billion to 8 billion took only 12 years. This has sparked long-standing concerns about rapid population growth. These include food shortages and rampant unemployment.
The world’s greatest demographic challenge is not rapid population growth but the aging of the population. Thoughtful preparedness–combining behavioral changes, investment in human capital and infrastructure, policy and institutional reforms, and technological innovations–can enable countries to meet the challenge and take advantage of the opportunities presented by demographic change.
