Qubit Quest takes a topological turn
Pedram Roushan, of Google Quantum AI says that the most compelling aspect of this new breed is their ability to perform quantum logic operations, and their relative immunity to noise from thermal and environmental sources. He says that this combination was first recognized by the Russian born physicist Alexei Kitaev in 1997, when he made the very initial proposal of topological computing.
Kitaev realized at the time that non-Abelian anions could run any quantum computing algorithm. Now that the quasi-particles have been created by two different groups, each group is eager to create their own quantum computing tools based on these quasi-particles.
