Reinventing Longevity: Aubrey de Grey’s Quest to Cure Aging

Aubrey de Grey wants to cure aging, whether you like it.
Do not think of living forever. Think about not getting sick again.

Aubrey de Grey certainly would not want you to interpret his work in any other way. The biomedical gerontologist with the famously beard is behind many headlines that claim \”immortality\”. De Grey wants to make death a thing from the past. People died before medical technology was developed to prevent it. This has been his focus for the past 20 years.

De Grey began his career in 1992 as a software specialist at the Cambridge University’s genetics department, where he maintained a database of information about fruit flies. In 1999, he published \”The Mitochondrial-Free Radical Theory Of Aging\” where he laid out his key idea that we now know: preventing damage of mitochondrial DNA should make people live longer. It was such a well-received idea that Cambridge awarded him with a PhD in the following year. In a 2007 interview, De Grey distilled his thesis into a sound bite: \”[Humans] [are] machines. Aging is the wear and tear of a device, the accumulation damage to the machine and therefore potentially fixable.\”
