Researchers develop a solution to slow down aging and extend the lifespan of cells

Scientists have spent decades exploring ways to slow the ticking clock of the aging timer.

Longevity. Technology: In 2020 a team of researchers at the University of California San Diego identified and genetically modified two distinct mechanisms of cell aging to extend cell life [1]. Their research has now progressed, utilizing synthetic biology and gene-circuits to delay cellular aging. The team’s innovative method could revolutionize scientific methods for aging prevention, and contribute to reprogramming the aging pathways in different human cell types.

Researchers describe in Science how cells from yeast, plants and animals, as well as humans, all contain gene-regulatory circuits that are responsible for various physiological functions including aging. The UC San Diego researchers discovered that these gene circuits can function in a variety of ways. They are similar to the electric circuits that control household appliances. Cells age differently depending on their genetic material, environment, etc. Researchers found that cells age through either DNA stability decline or by mitochondrial decline.
