Researchers discover new molecules that can boost longevity
Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem discovered a family of molecules which allows cells to repair damaged parts, allowing tissues to maintain their proper function. C. elegans, a roundworm model organism, was used to demonstrate the efficacy. The team of researchers examined the effects of different therapies on quality of life and longevity, and showed that they could protect worms and human cells against damage.
Researchers Einav Gross, Shmuel Benjamin-Sasson and their team have created a company named Vitalunga in order to translate the research into therapeutics.
Longevity. Technology: The aging of tissues is a result of the decreased effectiveness of the quality-control mechanisms in our cells. This leads to an accumulation of defective mitochondria, the cellular \”power plants\” responsible for energy production. Mitochondria are like tiny electric batteries which help cells to function. Mitophagy is a complex mechanism that replaces damaged mitochondria with new ones. This mechanism, however, declines as we age. It leads to cell dysfunction, deterioration of tissue activity and many age-related illnesses, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, heart failure, and sarcopenia.
