Researchers Expand Robots’ Ability to Learn From Videos

Carnegie Mellon University’s new research has allowed robots to learn how to do household chores from watching videos of real people doing them.

This research could improve the utility and usability of robots at home by allowing them to help people with chores like cleaning and cooking. Two robots learned 12 tasks, including opening a door, lid, and oven drawer; picking up a phone, vegetable, or can of soup; and taking the pot off the stove.

Deepak Pathak is an assistant professor at CMU’s School of Computer Science’s Robotics Institute. He said that the robot could learn from watching videos where and how people interact with various objects. From this knowledge, we are able to train a model which allows two robots complete similar tasks in different environments.
