The anti-aging gene can rewind the heart’s age
Ten years.
A gene that slows down the biological age of the heart by 10 years was discovered in a group of centenarians. Scientists at the University of Bristol, in collaboration with the MultiMedica Group, in Italy, have published the breakthrough in Cardiovascular Research. It offers potential treatment for heart failure patients.
Carriers of healthy mutants genes, such as those who live in blue zones on the planet, can often live up to 100 years and beyond, while remaining in good health. They are also less likely to suffer from cardiovascular complications. Scientists believe that the gene protects their hearts from diseases associated with aging such as heart failure.
Researchers have shown in this study that one of the healthy mutant genes found to be particularly common among centenarians can protect cells taken from heart failure patients requiring a cardiac transplant.
