Scientists reversed the signs of aging on mice
A diet high in cholesterol and fat was associated with a greater likelihood of hair loss and a change from black to white. Diet also caused inflammation of the skin.
Researchers genetically modified mice in the first phase of the study to cause atherosclerosis. This is a condition where fat deposits are formed in the arteries.
The mice were then given either a Western-style diet, high in cholesterol and fats, or untreated rat food from 12 to 20 week old. The mice that consumed the Western diet developed skin lesions and their hair turned white. The longer the mice consumed the Western diet, the more severe their symptoms became. Three quarters of animals developed skin lesions by week 36.
