Memory loss caused by depression and aging can be reversed with new molecules
In preclinical models, these molecules do not only improve symptoms but also, remarkably, appear to restore the brain impairments that cause memory loss.
There are currently no medications available to treat cognitive symptoms, such as memory impairment, that can occur with depression, mental illness, and aging, says Dr. Etienne Sibille, the lead scientist and deputy director of the Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute, at CAMH.
He says that these compounds are unique in that they are specifically targeted at activating the brain receptors which are impaired and causing memory loss.
