Reversing the clock: A chemical approach to rejuvenating cells

Discovering chemical ways to reverse aging, restore cellular function

Researchers have opened a new front in the battle against ageing and diseases associated with aging. A team of Harvard Medical School scientists conducted the study that published the first chemical method to reprogram cells into a youthful state. This was previously only possible with a powerful form of gene therapy.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology published a research paper in Aging on July 12, 2023. The title of the article was \”Chemically induced reprogramming for cellular aging\”.

The team’s discoveries are based on the discovery that expression of specific genetic factors called Yamanaka Factors could convert adult stem cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The Nobel Prize-winning research raised the question whether it was possible to reverse cell aging without making cells too young or cancerous.
