Researchers Discover Way to Reverse Aging
Recently, Boston laboratories conducted experiments that showed reversed aging in mice. Similar results could be seen in humans.
The combined experiments, which were carried out over a period of 13 years, published in Cell on Thursday (12 January) showed that blind, old mice gained their eyesight and developed a smarter brain. They also built stronger muscle and kidney tissues. This contradicted the theory that DNA is the only factor that causes aging. It proved that structural and chemical changes to the chromatin play a role without changing the genetic code.
Researchers found that mice aged due to a breakdown of epigenetic information. Restoring the epigenome reversed the aging process.
