OpenAI’s Sam Altman to Congress: Regulate us, please!
In an historic and wide-ranging congressional hearing held on Tuesday, the creator behind the most powerful artificial intelligence in the world called for the government to regulate the industry.
Sam Altman is the CEO and cofounder at OpenAI. He spoke about the AI that powers products like ChatGPT.
He called on Congress for the establishment of a new agency that would license large-scale AI initiatives, create safety standards and conduct independent audits in order to ensure compliance with safety levels.

Hearings were a major step in gaining a comprehensive understanding of AI and its governance, as AI is evolving and becoming progressively more integrated into our daily lives. They also revealed that AI researchers do not understand how powerful generative systems work.

The AI generated by large language models, such as GPT-4 (the model behind the latest version of ChatGPT), can read more texts than any human could ever do and sound like a real person. Even their creators don’t know how AIs actually reason, any more than the lion tamer really understands what an actual lion thinks.
