Sam Altman’s call for U.S. and China collaboration on AI Regulation: a Risky Proposition

OpenAI’s Sam Altman calls for AI regulation worldwide, including China
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called on the U.S. to work more closely with China in the development of artificial intelligence over the weekend. He did not mention that ChatGPT, one of his company’s most popular products, isn’t available in China. Instead he said that China should play a key role in the global AI rollout and development.

He said, \”With the rise of increasingly powerful AI systems the stakes for international cooperation have never before been higher,\” in his keynote address at a conference organized by the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence. His words sounded more like a leader of an advocacy group for responsible tech, than the CEO of a firm responsible for shepherding this emergence.

Altman’s request for U.S. and China collaboration on \”mitigating risks\” is just the latest (and given the current state of U.S. and China technological competition, perhaps the most dangerous) incident in Altman’s quest to convince the rest of the world to regulate the industry. He has met with policymakers from around the globe, including in South America and Africa, Europe, and Asia. This is unlike other tech leaders who are reluctant to do so. He is probably advocating rules that will benefit OpenAI.
