Scientists extend the life of yeast cells by slowing aging at the cellular level

Researchers slow aging in cells
Scientists still have to determine if humans can live indefinitely or reach a maximum age. We know that the aging in our body is related to the aging of individual cells. In molecular biology, yeast is used as a model to study aging. Scientists discovered in 2020 that yeast cells can go through two different aging pathways. In one, nucleoli structures are degraded, and ribosomal RNA is less silenced. In the other, mitochondrial function and heme levels are affected. Researchers suggested that there were two types of terminal aging.

The research team, in a follow-up study, has altered the genetics behind these pathways and extended the life of cells. Science has published the work. The researchers applied a solution that changed gene circuits in the cells to stop them from deteriorating.
