Scientists successfully rejuvenate human cells in the lab to reverse the aging process

Scientists have successfully reversed the aging of human cells in the lab

Since the dawn of time, humans have been aware that they cannot win this battle. We can either hate or accept it (eventually), but we cannot avoid getting older. Scientists have tried to identify the biological causes of aging and determine if it is possible to reverse or stop the process. A new study confirms some of the minor victories that have occurred along the way.

Researchers were able reverse the aging of old human cells through the delivery of a specific molecule into their mitochondria. These are the structures in cells that produce energy. This method stops the cells from senescent–a state where they are no longer able to duplicate. Researchers believe the accumulation of cells in organs plays a key role in the aging process.

The authors of a blog post at The Conversation wrote: \”We don’t yet fully understand why our cells become senescent with age. However, damage to DNA and exposure to inflammation, as well as damage to protective molecules located at the ends of chromosomes, the telomeres, have been suggested.\” Recently, some people have suggested that a driver of senescence could be the loss of our ability turn genes on and of at the correct time and place.
