How blasting worms in space could slow the ageing process
The tiny, transparent worm may hold the key to preventing the frailty that comes with age and the ill health it brings.
Scientists in Britain are sending tens and thousands of worms to space as part of a government-backed project. The aim is to test whether two drugs can slow or prevent muscle loss caused by microgravity.
The c-elegans 1mm worms in space have no resistance to push against, so they quickly lose strength. This is similar to the effects experienced by older people on Earth, or those suffering from conditions such as muscular dystrophy.
