Stability AI launches open-source version of DreamStudio using StableStudio

Stability AI releases StableStudio – the open-source future of DreamStudio

Stability AI announced this week the release of StableStudio. This is an open-source version of DreamStudio. Stability AI’s AI-powered design software.

Stability AI wrote in a blog that it hoped to \”foster [a project] that can outpace any developed by one company\”, alluding recent investments made by tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon into the generative AI area.

Stability AI stated that \”we believe the best method to extend this impressive reach is by open, community driven development instead of a private iteration a closed source product.\” Our goal is to collaborate with the community to develop a world-class interface for generative artificial intelligence [that] users can fully control.

DreamStudio began as an open-source animation studio to create AI art models based on the Disco Diffusion model. Stable Diffusion brought DreamStudio in line with other generative image platforms, such as MidJourney or Nightcafe.

The differences between StableStudio & DreamStudio can be considered minor. StableStudio does not have DreamStudio branding, or Stability-specific features like billing, API management and backend API calls.

Stability AI stated that DreamStudio would be its preferred instance, managed by StableStudio, and it will stay updated with StableStudio, \”whenever feasible.\”

The company added: \”The release StableStudio reinforces Stability AI’s commitment to transparency and open-source,\” \”We are eager to see the community’s creations.\”

StableStudio may have a generous tone, but some cynics might think it’s an attempt to offload DreamStudio development to the community of open source. This is not an unjust assumption. Stability AI faces pressure to monetize their vast efforts that range from biomedical and generative music to art and animation.

Emad Mostaque, CEO of Stability AI, has hinted that the company plans to go public. However, Semafor reported recently that Stability AI – which raised more than $100 million in venture funding last October with a reported valuation exceeding $1 billion – \”is burning cash and is slow to generate revenues.\”
