The stem cell technique reverses aging in human cells
O,.,o.
Stanford scientists have discovered a way of essentially returning older cells to their youthful state. The cells are treated using a mixture of proteins that were used in early embryonic development. This removes most of the molecular markers of aging. In mouse tests, the cells resembled those of younger animals.
Stem cells can differentiate into any type of cell found in the human body. This is not only vital for the healthy development of embryos but also opens up a fascinating treatment to replenish lost cells and repair damaged organs and tissue.
This type of treatment is being done using induced pluripotent cells (iPS). Scientists take adult cells from a patient, usually taken from their skin, and expose them to Yamanaka proteins. They revert the cells to their embryonic state and are ready to be transformed into whatever cells are needed.
