Stopping arthritis at the beginning
Over a million Americans have knee and hip replacements every year. This is a last-resort treatment for osteoarthritis pain and mobility problems. The disease progresses due to the degeneration of our protective layer of cartilage, which prevents our bones from grinding against each other when we sit, move, stand or write.
What if doctors could repair cartilage damage before surgery was required?
Researchers at the Keck Medical School of USC used a bio-implant based on stem cells for the first time to repair cartilage in large animals and delay degeneration of joints. With the help of a $6-million grant from California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, this work will be taken to humans.
