Microneedles with stem cells can speed wound healing
Stem cells can be powerful tools to unlock new frontiers of regenerative medicine. A new study shows that dissolvable microneedles can deliver a specific type of stem cells into damaged tissues to heal wounds.
The body’s mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) replenishes bone, cartilage and muscle cells. Scientists have discovered that these cells have greater healing potential. MSCs can be introduced to damaged tissue to increase the formation of blood vessels, reduce inflammation and keep cells living.
There are some problems. One problem is that injecting MSCs with regular needles in the tissue can lead to further scarring and damage. It takes a lot of cells to ensure that they do their job.
