Stem Cells: The Promise and the Perils

Can stem cells help humans live longer?

Except for a few small examples, the only stem-cell-based treatment that is used in clinics involves the use of haematopoietic cells from the bone marrow and blood – cells that only produce blood cells. These cells are then transplanted into blood cancer patients. The cells can be taken from the blood of a sibling, an unrelated donor or from a cancer patient themselves. This procedure has been used for nearly 50 years to treat blood cancers, and more recently, multiple sclerosis. How likely is it for the stem cell predictions to become true?

Startups offer stem cells to treat everything from wrinkles to age-related illnesses. The science behind stem cells is not yet clear.
