Novelty and Importance of Chronic Supplementation with a Mitochondrial (MitoQ).
Researchers found that after taking the supplement, subjects’ blood vessels looked younger by at least 15 to 20 percent.
The production of reactive oxygen species by mitochondria is one key factor in age-related vascular disease. Our laboratory has shown that supplementation with the mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant MitoQ improves vascular endothelial function by reducing mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and ameliorates arterial stiffening in old mice, but the effects in humans are unknown. We aimed to apply our preclinical findings in humans to determine the safety and effectiveness of MitoQ. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled, crossover study, 20 healthy older adults aged 60-79 with impaired endothelial functions (brachial arterial flow-mediated dilating 6%) received oral MitoQ supplementation for 6 weeks.
