Telomere Shortening: A Potential Link to Cognitive Decline and Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults

Telomere shortening is linked to depressive symptoms and memory loss in older adults

As we age, our cells lose more of the life-giving line.

Researchers in South Korea found that this fuse known as the Telomere is abnormally short in cells of older people who are relatively well but have seen early signs of cognitive decline and depressive symptoms, such as memory impairment.

The randomized controlled study provides more evidence in support of the telomere hypotheses for aging. This hypothesis states that all cells reach a point at which they are no longer able to divide or replicate.
