Tesla has just filed a patent for a new lithium-ion battery. Is this battery the one that was promised to last a million miles?
How long should a battery for an electric vehicle last? Elon Musk appears to think a million mile is about right – last April, he announced Tesla had a ‘1 million-mile battery pack’ in the pipeline. This is a lofty goal to say the least. Do we really need batteries that last three or four times longer than a standard car? We will.

According to a Forbes article, although today’s Li-ion batteries are adequate for individual EV users, taxi services and long distance trucking require batteries that have been optimized for durability (according Ariel Cohen, an average trucker logs between 100,000-150,000 miles each year). Long-life batteries will be crucial to the success and development of the Tesla Network, a fleet of proposed robo-taxis.
