Montaigne, a Renaissance philosopher, said that death \”has us by the scruff at every moment.\” It could have been added: until it finally strangles us. What if we could escape death’s grip? What if you could live forever and avoid death?

It may seem that immortality is the stuff of science-fiction, but it is increasingly the focus of actual science. Google created Calico in 2013, a biotech company whose goal is to \”solve death\”. PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel has pledged to fight death. Amazon chairman Jeff Bezos invested in Altos Labs last year. The company plans to \”rejuvenate cells\” in order to \”reverse diseases.\” Bezos owns The Washington Post.
