The Age-related Impact on Apoptosis: An Investigation of the Fading Efficiency in Senescent Cell Clearance

As we age, the ability to clear senescent cells decreases.

The accumulation of senescent cellular material is revealed in a new study, and it suggests that therapies to remove these cells could have immediate and long-term benefits for human health.

As cells become exhausted, damaged beyond repair and no longer capable of replicating, they are normally removed from the body by a process called apoptosis. This is a self-destructive program that the cell initiates or the immune system removes. This system is a safety net that prevents damaged cells from becoming active. It also prevents cancer in cells affected by mutations.

As we age, our disposal system begins to fail, just like so many other systems in our body. This causes an accumulation of damaged, unwanted senescent senescent cell in all tissues of our bodies. The accumulation of senescent cell is one of the reasons why we age, and the subject of intensive research in recent years.
