Altering Gene Expression Due to Age-Related Modifications in the Nuclear Membrane
Researchers from the University of Virginia School of Medicine discovered that our nuclear membranes change shape as we age. This prevents our genes working properly.
The nuclear membranes are distorted as we age
All our cells have the same DNA, but they show great variation in their function and appearance. How is it possible that they all have the same DNA when their functions and appearances are so different? All it comes down to is gene expression, and which genes are switched on and off. In order for a cell to become a liver, it must have certain genes turned on. These same genes then need to be switched off in order for the cell to become a brain. Problems can occur if the wrong genes are turned off.
