The Brain Connectivity of Near-Centenarians, Centenarians and Near-Centenarians is Strengthened: A World First Study

Brain connectivity is stronger in people over 95 years old

Researchers at UNSW’s Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing, led by Dr. Jiyang Jiang, a neuroimaging specialist and expert in brain ageing research found that people aged 95+ showed more activation on the left side and right side of the brain than those younger.

Near-centenarians, and even centenarians who are not affected by dementia, are often viewed as examples of healthy aging. They also show resistance to age-related cognitive decline.

\”We wanted see if the functional connectivity in the brain of people aged 95 or older helped them maintain brain function well into their 11th decade,\” explains Dr. Jiang.
