The Bystander effect: Senescent cells accelerate aging and disease

The more senescent cells there are, the faster they accumulate

We want to highlight a recent study that shows how senescent cell poisons their healthy neighbors. The more senescent cells there are, they cause other cells to become senescent faster.

What are senescent or aging cells?

As you get older, more and more of your cells will enter a senescent state. Senescent cells don’t divide or support tissues they are a part of; they instead emit a variety of potentially harmful chemicals that encourage nearby healthy cell to enter the same state of senescence, known as the \”bystander effects\”. They can cause many problems, including a reduction in tissue repair and chronic inflammation.
