The study identifies possible drug treatments for telomere disease
A new study, which is the culmination of decades of research, may provide a breakthrough for treating dyskeratosis and other telomere-related diseases in which cells age prematurely. Researchers at the Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center found several small molecules which appear to reverse the cellular aging. Suneet Agarwal MD, Ph.D. is the senior investigator of this study and hopes that at least one compound will be advanced to clinical trials. The findings were published in Cell Stem Cell on April 21.
It could be the first dyskeratosis, or DC treatment that reverses all the effects of the disease on the body. Bone marrow transplant is a high-risk treatment that only restores the blood system. DC, however, affects multiple organs.
