The Effects of Age and Sex on Transcriptional Profiles of Aging in African Turquoise Kilifish

Transcriptional Profiling of Aging Tissues from Female and Male African Turquoise Killifish
A new vertebrate model, the African turquoise killifish has great potential in aging research because of its short lifespan. RNA-seq studies on the aging of turquoise killifish have only examined a single organ or sex, and/or evaluated non-reference samples. We describe a dataset of ribosomal RNA-seq library data generated from brain, heart muscle and spleen tissues from both sexes and young and old animals in the reference GRZ GRZ turquoise killerfish strain. We describe basic quality control procedures and demonstrate the usefulness of our dataset through differential gene expression and gene-ontology analyses based on age and gender. We show, however, that age has greater influence on the transcriptional landscapes of probed tissues than sex. We confirm the transcription of transposable element (TEs) in brain tissue, which is highly abundant and increases in expression as we age. This dataset is a valuable resource to explore gene and transposable element expression in relation to age and gender using a powerful, naturally short-lived vertebrate model.
