The Future of AI is in Danger: Analyzing the Geopolitical Impacts of AI Chips

The geopolitics of AI chips will define the future of AI

This statement is absurd. This is also true. Nearly all of the world’s advanced technology is produced in one facility. This facility is also located in a geopolitically volatile area of the world, where many analysts predict war within the next decade.

The future of artificial Intelligence is in danger.

TSMC’s chip fabrication plants, or “fabs”–the building where chips are actually built–sit along the western coasts of Taiwan, just 110 miles away from mainland China.

Taiwan and China have never been closer to war in the past 40 years. China, as tensions escalate, has started conducting military exercises in and around Taiwan that are unprecedented in size and intensity. Washington policymakers predict that China may invade Taiwan as early as 2025 or 2027.

A conflict between China and Taiwan would be disastrous for many reasons. It would also paralyze global AI. This is an under-appreciated effect. Simply put, the entire artificial intelligence field faces a precarious single failure point in Taiwan. This fact is often overlooked in the current fervor surrounding AI. You need to pay attention if you work on AI or are interested in it.
