WHO estimates that there are currently over 1.1 billion smokers in the world, and that tobacco kills 8 million people every year. Over 7 million deaths result from direct tobacco use, while 1.2 millions are caused by second-hand smoke.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, cigarette smoking causes more than 488,000 deaths in the United States each year. This includes more than 411,000 deaths caused by secondhand smoke. About one out of five deaths occurs annually or 1,300 per day.
Smoking causes disease and disablement and damages nearly every organ in the body. Smoking is responsible for more than 16 million Americans suffering from diseases such as cancer, heart disease and stroke. It also causes lung diseases and diabetes.
The total economic cost of smoking is over $300 billion per year in the U.S., which includes nearly $170 billion for direct medical care and lost productivity from premature deaths and second-hand smoke exposure.
