Cancer is caused by the loss of Y chromosomes, which is a natural part of aging.
Scientists are still discovering the biological functions of the Y chromosome. Researchers have found that men lose their Y-chromosomes as they age, and the phenomenon has been associated with heart disease, and more recently, cancer. Some studies suggest that the loss Y chromosome could explain why men die slightly earlier than women or why some cancers are more common in men.
A mouse model was used to demonstrate that a gene known as KDM5D on the Y-chromosome increases the risk of certain types of colorectal tumors metastasizing. Another research report revealed that bladder tumors can better evade the immune system when cells lose their Y chromosome. This increases the risk of developing aggressive bladder cancer.
