Researchers: We have created a lens that can take thermal cameras from spy movies and put them into your pocket
Thermal cameras are like something from a spy film. They \”see\” heat through the conversion of infrared light into an image. The cameras can detect the infrared radiation given off by vehicles, animals, electrical equipment, and even people. This allows them to be used in many industries.
Thermal imaging is still too expensive for many consumer products, such as smartphones or self-driving vehicles.
The team at Flinders University is working hard to make this technology something that we can use and not only something we see in spy films. We have developed a low cost thermal imaging lens which could be scaled-up and used by the general public. Our findings have been published in Advanced Optical Materials.
