The Paradox of Euthanasia & Life Extension: A Critical Analysis of the Right to Die and the Right to live

The Right to Die and the Right to Live

Euthanasia and life-extension share a similar goal, which is to end unnecessary suffering.

David Goodall, an Australian ecologist, took his life on May 10, this year. Scientist David Goodall, who was 104 years old, said that he regretted reaching this age because his health had declined. Goodall, who was unhappy with his situation despite not having a terminal illness (except for ageing itself), chose to end his own life by assisted suicide. The practice is not permitted in Australia. Goodall flew to Switzerland with his family and friends to an assisted suicide clinic, where he administered the lethal injection himself while listening to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The money raised through a crowd-funding campaign was used to cover the cost of the trip.

The right to a matter of rights

Goodall, a long-time supporter of euthanasia who was also a member of Exit International (a non-profit group that advocates the legalization and voluntary euthanasia as well as assisted suicide), said people should be able to die in dignity when the time is right.
