This common drug for memory loss may also help restore eye sight
The drug citicoline is found naturally in the human body and is used to treat brain injuries as well as illnesses. Doctors have been prescribing it for many years to treat strokes, Parkinson’s Disease, vascular dementia and general brain aging. The Clinical Interventions in Aging Journal notes that patients usually notice improvements when they take the drug. This is because the body uses the drug to repair and create cell membranes as well as reduce the presence of harmful free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage the cells of the body. They are also associated with illness and aging.
Researchers from NYU Grossman School of Medicine now have evidence that citicoline is also effective in treating glaucoma. Normal glaucoma treatment involves removing the fluid that builds up in the eyes. This causes pressure, and eventually wears out the cells and nerves in the eyes and brain. Although it is important to monitor fluid buildup, glaucoma may still worsen even after pressure has been removed from the eye.
