The Role of a Blown Blood-Brain Barrier In Epilepsy And Alzheimer’s Disease

Does a breached blood-brain barrier cause seizures in AD?

Scientists led by Daniela K. Kaufer of the University of California Berkeley and Alon F. Friedman of the Ben-Gurion University of the Nevev in Beer-Sheva (Israel) report in two papers published in Science Translational Medicine on December 4, that age-related cracks allow serum protein albumin to enter the brain where it activates TGFb receptors and over-excites neuronal networks. This impairs cognition. The occurrence of breaches was correlated with a localized slowing in cortical activity among epilepsy patients, Alzheimer’s patients, and mouse models of AD. These activity changes, called paroxysmal slower-wave events in epilepsy patients, are correlated with cognitive decline and interspersed by seizures.
