The Secret of Longevity: Yellow-Bellied Martmots’ Long Lives

The secret to long life may be found in marmots

The difference between chronological age (how old you are in years) and biological age is the difference between how your body has aged in response to the environment and how it has aged. Both can be a blessing or a curse. It is no wonder that people who are exposed to extreme stress and polluted surroundings may appear much older.

Yellow-bellied marmots tell us a lot about the two ages.

The groundhog is not the only burrow-dwelling marmot. These quirky rodents, also called whistle pigs or cat-sized mice, are fascinating to study. They have a much longer life expectancy than one would expect for a mammal their size. Marmots have an average lifespan of 15 years.
